Q-tips… A Small Everyday Item with a Century-Long Story

There are small things we use in our everyday lives so often that we rarely stop to ask: When did they first appear? And how did the idea begin?

Q-tips cotton swabs are one of those familiar everyday items.

They may seem simple today, but their story goes back more than a century.

The idea began in 1923, when Leo Gerstenzang noticed his wife placing small pieces of cotton on the ends of sticks while caring for their baby. That simple observation inspired the idea of producing ready-to-use cotton swabs.

The product was initially called Baby Gays. In 1926, the name Q-tips Baby Gays appeared, before eventually being shortened to the name we know today: Q-tips. The letter Q stands for “Quality,” while “Tips” refers to the cotton tips.

From Baby Care to Everyday Life

Over the years, cotton swabs were no longer associated only with baby care. Vintage advertisements began presenting them as a small, versatile item with a variety of everyday uses.

The vintage advertisement shown here is a wonderful example of advertising from another era. It features several characters in different vacation and travel situations, presenting the small box of Q-tips as something that could accompany the family for a variety of uses.

Even the advertisement itself tells us something about a different time: the hand-drawn illustrations, playful characters, detailed copy, and the vintage packaging design all reflect the visual language of advertising from that period.

A Small Product with a Long History

During the 1950s, Q-tips also became more closely associated with beauty. According to the brand’s official history, in 1950 the company collaborated with Hollywood makeup artist Ern Westmore on a beauty booklet featuring Q-tips.

In 1958, another change followed, allowing the company to introduce cotton swabs with paper sticks alongside the wooden ones used at the time.

The product, its packaging, and the way it was marketed would continue to change over the decades, yet the basic idea has remained familiar for more than a century.

Today, the company describes its original Q-tips cotton swabs as having tips made from 100% cotton, with the sticks now made from paper.

Perhaps this is one of the most fascinating things about looking back at vintage advertisements.

They do more than introduce us to products people once used. They open a small window onto everyday life, habits, ways of thinking, and the style of advertising from another time.

Fashion changes. Homes change. Advertising changes. Packaging changes.

Yet sometimes, the simplest things remain with us from one generation to the next.

A small item that began with a simple idea more than a century ago… and one we still recognize today.
